Hurricane Irma, possibly taking aim at the US mainland, is currently roaring toward the northeastern Caribbean islands as a Category 5 storm, according to the the National Hurricane Center.

South Florida residents could be impacted by the storm with sustained winds of 180 mph that could be potentially catastrophic in the region. The dangerous winds make Hurricane Irma the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean outside of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

As Irma continues to intensify, forecasts indicate the strong possibility that Florida will be impacted later this week and in the weekend. The National Hurricane Center is urging residents, governments, and businesses to prepare in advance, and plan ahead for long-term power outages, severe flash flooding, and widespread damage.
