Hurricane Season Safety Tips: How to Protect Yourself and Your Job Site

Now that we’re in the height of hurricane season, it’s more important than ever to take steps to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, and those around you. Hurricanes can be unpredictable, and thorough preparation is key to minimizing risks during severe weather. Here are some essential hurricane season safety tips for staying safe and securing your site before a storm.

General Hurricane Safety

  1. Stay Informed: Keep up to date with weather alerts from the National Weather Service. Hurricanes often change direction, and staying informed can help you adjust your preparations accordingly.
  2. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials such as fresh water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights with batteries, and a first aid kit.
  3. Secure Outdoor Items: Tie down or store anything that could become a projectile during high winds, such as patio furniture or construction materials.
  4. Evacuate If Needed: If local authorities call for an evacuation, follow their instructions.

Here are the specific steps you should take to secure your site before a storm hits.

Securing Portable Toilets Prior to Severe Weather

Portable toilets can be vulnerable to hurricanes, and it’s critical to secure them properly to prevent damage or hazards:

  1. Weigh Down the Unit: Place two or more concrete blocks or sandbags on the floor of each portable toilet to weigh it down.
  2. Tie Down the Unit: Use strong cables, straps, chains, or ropes to secure the unit to a sturdy structure, such as an L-shaped building or a tree.
  3. Block the Wind: Use heavy machinery to shield the portable toilet from wind impact.
  4. Move Units Indoors If Possible: Transport units to a garage or move them as close to a building as possible for extra protection.
  5. Secure the Door: Ensure that the door to each portable toilet is properly closed and latched to avoid damage.
